Best Overall — Greenworks Cordless Lawn Mower

Using a fertiliser on your lawn is an excellent way to improve its condition—but the synthetic variety is bad for the environment. This cordless mower transforms your grass clippings into fine mulching. The mulch blows back onto the lawn—where it decomposes and feeds nutrients back into your garden—it’s the circle of life.

If you’d rather collect your clippings and add them to your compost heap, you can set the mower to catch them in the 50-litre box.

A 40 volts lithium-ion battery powers this mower, which has a runtime of approximately 50 minutes and takes 120 minutes to charge (charger included).

The convenient part of Greenworks is that you can use the same battery for most of their power tools. This saves money and the environment since you can reuse the same batteries over again.

We love it because: You’re free to move around without the restriction of a cord. You get to produce your own fertiliser that’s automatically spread throughout your garden as you mow.

Best for Most Yards — Flymo Speedi-Mo Electric Rotary Lawn Mower

Equipped with a powerful 1500 Watts motor, the Flymo Speedi-Mo corded lawnmower is ready to take on an urban jungle. It’s fitted with a 14-inch cutting width, and you can adjust the height between 0.8 and 2.4 inches.

The mower will automatically collect all clippings into the 40-litre grass box, which means fewer trips to the compost bin. The grass collector also has a little peek-a-boo window to help you keep an eye on the content.

Storage is as simple as it gets with the folding handle and lightweight machine. It weighs only 11.5 kg, so it’s easy to carry to and from storage, plus “driving” it around the lawn won’t feel like pushing a tank.

This is a corded model, and although the cable is 12 metres long, you’ll likely need an extension lead for a larger lawn.

We love it because: It’s lightweight, powerful and comes with handy details such as the grass box window and convenient height lever.

Best Electric Lawn Mower for Small Garden — Flymo Robotic Lawn Mower

During the warmer months, gardens grow at a crazy rate. Who has time for grass cutting? If you’re a busy mum or businesswoman, mowing your lawn can feel like a chore. This is where the friendly Flymo Robotic mower comes into play.

It’s a cute little robot mower powered by an 18-volt lithium-ion battery. It can work in an area up to 400 square metres, but it’s also available in smaller and larger sizes.

Although the robot is small in size, you can alter the height settings from a maximum of 2 inches to a low trim of 0.8 inches, with a cutting deck width of 7 inches.

It’s simple to use—once you’ve done the prep work. A guidewire needs to be put in place, which you can either peg down or bury. The robot will mow itself randomly around your garden within this boundary.

Set up the charging station, and it will automatically refuel itself when needed. It’s even pet-friendly—if it bumps into your furbaby or any obstacle, it will change direction.

This mower doesn’t possess a grass box, instead of the tiny clippings mulch back into the grass.

We love it because: It creates mulch, which will fertilise your garden for free. It’s low maintenance, easy to use, and pet friendly.

Best Value — Allied UK ToolTronix Rotary Lawnmower

If you’re looking to get the best bang for your buck, this 1000 Watts lawnmower will give you a quick and clean cut. It’s fitted with a turbo drive motor that converts motor power into blade torque. In other words, it helps to maintain blade speed in all conditions—even if your grass is thick.

It features a 12-inch steel blade and three height settings to suit your lawn. The Air-Lift technology will remove grass clippings directly into the 25-litre grass box. The grass box isn’t as large as we’d like, but it’s sufficient for a well-behaved lawn.

Whether it’s you or your partner in charge of mowing, you can adjust the handle’s height to avoid a sore back. The cable is only 10 metres long, best suited for a small lawn—if your garden is medium to large, you’ll need an extension cord.

We love it because: Although the grass box and power cord are on the smaller side—the mower is powerful and gives you lots of torque for a clean cut.

Best Corded Mower — Bosch Rotak 34R Rotary Lawn Mower

The Bosch Rotak 34R is a favourite amongst many eco-homeowners. It’s powerful—fitted with a 1300 Watts power-drive motor. It can handle multiple grass conditions, including long or wet grass—we all know how unpredictable British summers can be.

You can adjust the cutting height using five settings from 0.8 to 3 inches. It also includes a roller at the back that helps to create a striped lawn.

Getting close to the edges of your grass can be tricky with a mower. But, before you dig out the shears, the 34R comes equipped with a grass comb that enables you to cut right along the edge of your lawn.

For easy storage, you can fold the handle, and the grass box is stackable.
We love it because: It’s a very powerful mower that can handle different grass conditions and heights—offering great versatility.

Best for Large Yards — Hyundai Corded Electric Lawn Mower

With a 15-inch cutting width, the Hyundai Electric mower is an excellent choice for medium to large gardens.

The power comes from an incredible 1600 Watts Hyundai motor—try not to race around the yard. It also enables you to create a gorgeous striped lawn with its fitted rear roller.

You can either collect your clippings into the 30-litre grass box or use the mulching function. If you choose the latter, cuttings are finely chopped and scattered throughout the lawn as you mow.

The power cord is on the shorter side (10 metres), so equip yourself with a suitable extension cord. You can store the lawnmower vertically to save space—the soft-grip handles can be folded to make it even more compact.
A three-year warranty covers the lawnmower by Hyundai UK.

We love it because: It’s the best electric lawn mower with the roller out of our picks — the large motor capacity can handle big green spaces, but it’s storage takes up very little

Why Electric?

There are lots of benefits to choosing electric over gas mowers—including:

Low Maintenance

Electric mowers require no petrol or oil; hence, there’s no need for oil changes or dirty maintenance work. You also won’t have to worry about spilling petrol everywhere as you fill or running to the garage when you’re out.

Ear Plugs Not Required

Fire up a petrol mower, and the whole street will know about it. This is bound to lead to an awkward conversation with the neighbours if you’re out mowing early on a Sunday morning.

Electric mowers aren’t as noisy, so not only will your hearing thank you, you can forget about a visit from the council.

Eco-Friendly

By using an electric mower, you’re effectively lowering your carbon footprint. You’ll also notice a difference in your immediate environment.

Gas mowers are like cars but on a smaller scale. They both chuck out fumes, yet the difference with a mower is that you walk behind it—breathing that in. An electric version doesn’t give off any direct emissions.

Long Term Savings

What many people often think is that going green is more expensive. But, the initial price of an electric push mower is on par with its gas mower cousin. However, since you won’t have to buy petrol or oil for the former, operation costs will be cheaper.

Types of Electric Mowers

There are different types of electric mowers. Where they differ is in how they cut the grass. Here’s a quick run-through:

1. Cylinder Mower

Cylinder mowers are equipped with a set of blades positioned at the front of the mower. These are convenient as they allow you to lower them much further than other types.

In other words, cylinder mowers can create that gorgeous “putting green” striped lawn that many homeowners want to achieve—but can’t with their old gas mower.

A major advantage with cylinder mowers is that you get the option of using different lawn care attachments. An aerator cassette creates tiny holes in the lawn that allows the grass to breathe, and a lawn grooming brush helps to remove debris.

2. Hover Mower

If you have a small, flat yard, a hover lawn mower is ideal. They ‘hover’ across your lawn whilst cutting it fine. They’re lightweight, compact and super easy to store.

The newest hover-mower advancements include vacuum collection. As you mow, the mower will automatically hoover up and collect grass clippings that you can dump afterwards.

3. Rotary Lawnmower

Rotary electric mowers come in a range of sizes, shapes and price ranges—so it’s easy to find one that suits your budget. A blade sits underneath the mower and spins at an incredibly fast pace—cutting the grass as you push the machine.

A rotary mower is ideal for medium to long grass, which means you can go longer in between mowing sessions. The downside is that they don’t cut as precisely as cylinder models.

Newer electric rotary mowers are available as self-propelled or power-driven. This means the mower will power itself forward at a comfortable walking pace. Self-propelled mowers are handy for anyone who finds it a challenge having to push the mower around.

Rotary mowers are also great for uneven terrain—unlike hover or cylinder models. Some will also come with a mulch plug. This option makes the mower cut the grass clippings into fine pieces that are blown deep into the lawn where you can’t see them.

Corded vs Cordless

Apart from the different types, you’ll also have to consider whether you’d like a corded or cordless model. Each has its pros and cons:

Corded

A corded lawn mower is ready whenever you need to cut your grass. You plug them into a socket nearby, and you get unlimited use (within the range of the cord, of course).

Storage is also a concern when it comes to this type of mower—the cord must be put away correctly to avoid damage.

In saying that, some models will have convenient cord storage onboard the machine. This enables you to keep the cable in one place, and it can help you to avoid annoying tangles.

Here are the pros of using a corded mower:

  • Affordable: Corded lawn mowers are more affordable compared to their cordless cousins. This is mainly because it doesn’t require a battery.
  • Unlimited use: Because there’s no battery, you won’t have to worry about finishing your lawn before the charge runs out. Take your time and tend to your growing grass.

Cons of using a corded electric mower:

  • Limited space: Although time isn’t an issue with a corded mower—it doesn’t allow you to reach everywhere. You’re restricted to the length of the cord or extension lead. Also, if you have lots of trees, bushes or other obstacles in your garden, it can be tricky to move around with a cable in tow.
  • Requires an extension cord: Most likely, you’ll need an extension cord to get your entire lawn done. This means you’ll have to drag a cable across the yard, which can be dangerous with pets or children around. You also have the added hassle of making sure you don’t mow over the cord itself.

Cordless

If you don’t want to feel like a dog tied to a kennel, you’d be better suited to a cordless mower. Cordless electric lawn mowers are fitted with a rechargeable battery—the runtime varies depending on the model.

In saying that, most use lithium-ion batteries that can give you, on average, up to an hour of runtime. A major plus for this type is that they’ll work on full-power until it dies. Unlike others, that will fade as they drain.

These batteries are available in different voltages—the higher the power rating, the more torque you get. High torque will result in a cleaner and faster cut, but they’re also slightly more expensive.

Pros of cordless electric lawn mowers:

  • Unlimited cutting area: You’re free to mow wherever the mood takes you. Without a cord holding you back, you’ll make light work of weaving around those shrubs. It’s also safer around children and pets since there’ll be no extension cord to worry about.
  • Smooth operation: Press start, and it goes—there’s no science to using a cordless mower. There’s no need to plug it in or start a motor—it’s ready to go—given the battery is fully charged.
  • Straightforward storage: There’s no need to take extra care of how you store cordless mowers.

Cons of using a cordless lawnmower:

  • Limited cutting time: Yes, once the battery is dead, so is the mower. If you have a large lawn to cut, either choose a battery with a considerable capacity or consider splitting the job into two days.
  • Long charging time: Charging the battery isn’t a two-minute job. In some cases, it can take hours for the battery to charge fully.
  • Expensive: Due to the added battery, cordless electric lawn mowers are more expensive. Furthermore, the price of replacing the battery can also be quite heart wrenching, so take proper care of it.

Choosing the Best Electric Lawn Mower

Electric mowers, whether corded or cordless, appear similar. However, there are a few key points to think about:

1. Cutting Deck Width

The mower’s width, also known as the swathe, will determine how broad one cutting stripe of the lawn will be. The wider the swathe, the fewer passes you’ll have to do—meaning, you’ll get the job done quicker.

But, a wider mower will require more power, which means a shorter runtime for a cordless model.

The average width ranges between 15 and 22 inches, but you can find larger or smaller models.

2. Power

Whether you go for a corded or cordless mower, power will make a difference. But, that doesn’t mean go for the biggest and beefiest motor.

A cordless mower’s power is determined by the voltage of the battery—as we explained above. They average between 20 and 60 volts, with the more powerful mowers ranging from 58 to 82 volts.

If you have a lawn that goes wild when growing, you’ll need a mightier mower to handle the long grass. For a well-behaved green space, you can suffice with a smaller model.

Bigger voltage mowers are more expensive and heavier to push, whereas mowers with lower power ratings are lighter and more affordable.

Please note that although most cordless mower manufacturers will mention runtime, the actual time will depend on grass conditions. If your lawn is particularly tall, damp, wet or thick, it will take a toll on the battery, which means the runtime will be cut slightly short—pardon the pun.

3. Grass Clippings

Convenient lawn mowers will discharge and pick up the grass clippings for you—all you have to do is push and guide. If you choose one with this function, check how it collects the grass. Some mowers will discharge from the rear directly into a bag, others from the side.

Some mowers will dump the clippings directly onto the lawn. This means you’ll have to either rake it up or leave it to decompose—the worms will be truly grateful for the latter, but if you want that manicured-lawn look, this isn’t for you.

4. Height Adjustability

Height adjustability is often forgotten about, but it’s actually quite important. The first cut of the year will be more manageable if the mower is in a higher position. As the season continues, gradually lower it for a closer trim.

A good lawn mower can be adjusted by several inches to suit the length of grass you want to chop.

Best Electric Lawn Mower FAQs

How Long Do Electric Lawn Mower Batteries Last?

Electric lawn mower batteries last anywhere between 30 and 90 minutes. However, this is dependent on the size of the battery, the mower’s power and the condition of the grass.

How to Start an Electric Lawn Mower?

Powering up an electric mower is much easier compared to petrol models. Most will have an ignition or start button that you simply press until it whirls into life. If your mower is corded, you’ll have to first plug it into an outlet.

Are Electric Lawn Mowers Any Good?

Yes, they are—and highly efficient. But, they won’t suit all types of yards—electric mowers are best suited to gardens of less than 743 square metres.

Additionally, high amounts of foliage can become a challenge for electric mowers.

Creating a Healthy Lawn

Having that green, luscious lawn is something many homeowners pride themselves on. But, if you maintain it by a petrol-drinking, toxic-fume producing machine—is it really worth it?

Electric mowers are the eco-solution for anyone looking to reduce their carbon footprint and keep their own green space under control. They’re available as corded or cordless and in a range of sizes—some will even produce your own fertiliser.

We brought you some of the best electric mowers for your garden, all available in the UK.
