8 Best Collapsible Water Bottles for an Adventure in 2022

Last updated on
Foldable water bottles - we’re sure you’ve seen them. From the collapsible water bottle Tesco has on sale, to the fancy designer ones you scroll past on Instagram. They may be the best travel water bottles, but they’re just plastic nightmares, right?

We sure won’t deny that plastic and silicone are (often) bad materials… but are they worse than the millions of single-use plastic bottles we waste? No, they aren’t even close.

If you want to make small steps towards an eco lifestyle, these best collapsible water bottle reviews are a great place to start.

Remember, going for a reusable bottle means you can save an average of 156 plastic bottles annually. Even if some reusable bottles are made of plastic they are still great eco friendly bottles!

Also, all the foldable water bottles from this article are BPA-free and made of food-grade materials. No health issues here!

Best All-Round Collapsible Water Bottle UK – HYDAWAY

Finding American innovative products with UK shipping is not always any easy task. But HYDAWAY is both eco-friendly and available in the UK without monstrous shipping costs! The HYDAWAY holds 511ml and presses into a 1.5 inch disc. It’s planet friendly and available in numerous colours (we love Timber Green). That’s why it’s our top collapsible bottle for hydration.

We love it because: the lid is entirely BPA-free, food grade silicone, and ensures there are no leaks in your bag throughout the day.

Most Flexible Collapsible Water Bottle – Nomader

The Nomader is the most flexible water bottle on the list! It holds 650ml of hot or cold water and rolls up when you’re finished. It’s free of BPA, BPS, PVC, phthalates, lead (obviously), latex, and other harmful chemicals.

More info on this bottle and Nomader here.

We love it because: This folding bottle goes in the freezer, fridge, airplanes (no metal parts) and dishwashers without a single complaint! No surprise this bottle also has its spot into our selection of the best eco-friendly water bottles.

Best Pocket-Sized Collapsible Sports Bottle – ONEISALL

eco-collapsible-water-bottle

One is all you need here! Although it looks like it won’t hold the most amount of water, it’s actually quite clever. The easy-to-grip hourglass shape allows for the 500ml silicone bottle to compress super small. The only downside? Cleaning it is a bit of a chore. But to save the planet from single use plastics, we think it’s worth it!

We love it because: It’s a mere 4cm deep once it’s compressed and slides right into your jeans pocket.

Best Lightweight Collapsible Bottle – Que

que-collapsible-drink-bottle

Collapsible, lightweight and made of 100% food safe (BPA-free silicone), the Que is a modern, twisty take on the silicone water bottle. It’s as sleek as the Sho bottle but smaller and more lightweight! It holds 568ml of hot or cold water and comes in a brilliant range of bright colours so you can happily show off your new eco-friendly bottle.

Psst. These colours match nicely with our best biodegradable phone cases!

We love it because: the neck is wide enough to fit in ice cubes and is topped with an 18/8 stainless steel lid – because why top an eco silicone water bottle with more plastic?

Best Collapsible Bottle with Water Filter – Joypur

A premium, rollable water bottle that holds 600ml. The Joypur is a simple design with an annoyingly plastic lid, but happily, the food grade silicone body will last years longer than plastic thanks to its durability.

We love it because: the 0.01 micron ultrafiltration membrane water filters enable you to use tap water without any safety concerns, instead of filling up from purified bottled water. It’s great for camping!

Best Camping Collapsible Water Bottle – Nalgene

Okay, so it’s near the bottom of the list. Here’s why: it’s plastic! PE plastic. Making it is, by definition, terrible for the environment… but it is recyclable and reusable, not to mention entirely food-grade safe. So, it’s not actually a single use water bottle. This foldable, scrunchable container type bottle holds 1 litre, 1.5 litres or 3 litres.

We love it because: it’s a great one for hiking and camping when lightweight belongings and backpack space is a priority but you still want to hold several litres of water.

Best Dishwasher-Safe Collapsible Bottle – Vapur

vapur-collapsible-water-bottle

Yep, another PE-lined collapsible plastic bottle. This one holds 1 litre and is dishwasher safe – did you know dishwashers waste less water than hand washing? It’s a great roll up water bottle to have in your bag for emergencies.

Read our complete review of the Vapur collapsible bottle.

We love it because: the inside is odour, taste and stain resistant so you can fill it with fruit juice and not worry about funky notes lingering!

Best Water Bottle for Work – STOJO

stojo-cup

Last on our list is the STOJO collapsible water bottle! We are huge fans of their lightweight, leak proof coffee cups too. These bottles hold 592ml of icy cold water and are available in chic pastel shades. Of course, the silicone is BPA-free, lead-free, phthalate-free, and LFGB-certified as food grade.

We love it because: unlike many collapsible water bottles, it doesn’t have that gym/outdoorsy vibe, so it will look right at home on your office desk.

Psst! Most of these have free delivery with Amazon. Pick one now and you’ll be set for a lifetime.

All products ship to the UK, most of them for free!

Quick Guide to Collapsible Water Bottles

Hunting for your next collapsible water for your gym bag? Or just need a new bottle to motivate your hydration goals? This is what to look for in a collapsible water bottle.

Materials such as food grade silicone, stainless-steel and even glass are all great for water bottles. To keep the bottle flexible, silicone is the one to look out for here. Make sure it’s food grade and BPA-free, so it won’t leach chemicals into your water and will last a very long time.

Figuring out the durability of the bottle before you buy it is tricky, but not impossible. Silicone itself is very durable and can withstand very hot temperatures easily (that’s why it’s used for cake moulds). The real weaknesses will be the seal around the lid, any water filter that’s included, and the areas that fold inwards as it collapses.

Size and capacity are important too. Look at the size of when it’s collapsed (will it fit in your yoga bag?) as well as full. Remember, the larger the capacity, the heavier it will be when full. Collapsible water bottle sizes range from 500ml to 3 litres.

FAQ

How do you clean a collapsible water bottle?

If your bottle is dishwasher-safe make sure it’s fully open and wash it on the top rack. For washing by hand, it’s best to use a brush with a long handle, so you can scrub every crease inside the bottle with soapy water. For a deep clean, fill the bottle with water, bicarb of soda, and a little vinegar overnight, then clean out thoroughly.

Is glass or stainless-steel a better material?

In terms of eco-friendliness, glass, steel and silicone are all pretty great. Silicone is made from quartz and it’s flexible properties make it a great plastic alternative for collapsible bottles. Stainless-steel is a better material for insulated water bottles (they can keep water icy for 24 hours!) and glass is best for at-home use. All are a step up from plastic!

When should you replace a collapsible water bottle?

Food grade silicone is a very long-lasting material that can be used over and over. Expect your collapsible bottle to be with you for a decade – at least! Replace your bottle if the silicone is punctured or no longer leak proof, or it’s become brittle (happens at temperatures of 300°C+). Recycling your silicone is possible, but you’ll need to find a recycling centre that accepts it – most local councils won’t accept it in the recycling bin.

Do water bottles contain dangerous chemicals?

A single use water bottle is usually made from PET plastic. Many, but not all, single use plastics can contain BPA which is a potentially dangerous chemical. Furthermore, single use water bottles shed millions of microplastics in their water too. Silicone, in comparison, is BPA-free and doesn’t break down into microplastics much at all. If you’re really worried about this, look at our recommended Stay Sixty stainless steel bottle instead… but bear in mind that it won’t be collapsible!
